The brick that replaced the travel pouch

Two years ago a student bag in Lahore had a laptop brick, a 20W phone cube, and a mystery cable that only worked on Tuesdays. In 2026 the search that keeps coming up is “65W GaN charger Pakistan.” People want one small plug that can sit on a hostel extension lead and feed a USB-C laptop plus a phone.

GaN is Gallium Nitride. In plain language: the charger can push more watts without turning into a hand warmer the size of a soap dish. That matters here because our sockets are crowded, our summers are rude, and a plastic 65W charger that is actually a 20W chip with a fat shell will cook itself.

Wattage is not a personality

• 20W PD: Fine for most iPhones. It will not meaningfully charge a USB-C laptop.
• 25W to 45W PPS: The Samsung and many Xiaomi phones want PPS, not just “PD” written on the box.
• 65W: The first wattage that can charge a 14-inch USB-C laptop at a useful speed and still have leftover for a phone if the ports are designed honestly.
• 100W: Only if you carry a bigger laptop or two people share one brick. You pay in size and price.

The two-port lie

A “65W 2-port” charger often means 65W on port A alone. Plug two devices and it may split 45/20 or even 30/20. Read the tiny table on the back. If there is no table, assume the second device will crawl. I have watched a “65W” unit drop a notebook to 15W the moment a phone joined. That is not GaN magic. That is a missing controller.

Heat, voltage, and Pakistani sockets

If the charger is too hot to hold after 20 minutes, unplug it. Good GaN runs warm, not painful. Also look for over-voltage and short-circuit claims that are printed, not only in a Facebook caption. Our line voltage moves. A charger that only ever lived in a 110V demo video is not automatically safe on a 220V board with a loose socket.

Who should not buy 65W

If you only charge one Android phone at night and never carry a laptop, a honest 25W or 33W PPS cube is enough and stays cheaper. 65W is for people who already carry two devices or who are tired of leaving a laptop brick at the office.
