If you've bought a charger in the last two years you've seen 'GaN' on the box. It's not marketing fluff — gallium nitride is a semiconductor that lets chargers do more in a smaller, cooler package. Here's the short version of why it's the right upgrade.

Same power, half the size

GaN switches at much higher frequencies than silicon, so the components that convert power can be dramatically smaller. The result: a 65W GaN charger that's smaller than the 30W brick that shipped with an old laptop.

Less heat, more reliability

Less energy is wasted as heat, which means the charger runs cooler and can sustain its rated output. A hot charger throttles and shortens its own lifespan; a cool GaN charger just keeps going.

  2. Pick the wattage your biggest device needs (laptop = 45–100W)
